An Accessible Mountain!
Latrigg: A Short, Accessible Hike with Big Rewards
If you’re looking for a hike that delivers incredible views without demanding hours of effort, Latrigg is hard to beat. Sitting just outside Keswick in the Lake District, this small but mighty fell offers one of the most accessible routes to a truly breathtaking panorama.
I recently made the trip up Latrigg, and it reinforced something I really value about the outdoors—it should be for everyone.
One of the standout features of this walk is how accessible it is. Thanks to its inclusion in the Miles Without Stiles initiative, the route has been designed to be as barrier-free as possible. That means no stiles, wide and well-surfaced paths, and a steady, manageable gradient throughout. It’s ideal for wheelchair users, families with pushchairs, or anyone who might usually find traditional hiking routes a challenge.
The walk itself is relatively short, and you can tailor it to suit your needs. Starting from the higher car park at Underskiddaw (CA12 4PF) makes it even more achievable, turning it into a gentle outing rather than a strenuous climb. Despite its ease, it never feels underwhelming.
And then there’s the view.
From the summit, you’re rewarded with a sweeping vista over Keswick, Derwentwater, and the surrounding fells. On a clear day, the landscape stretches endlessly, with layers of hills rolling into the distance. It’s the kind of scenery you’d expect after a long day in the mountains—yet here it is, just a short walk from the car park.
For me, Latrigg is a perfect example of how hiking can—and should—be inclusive. It proves that you don’t need to tackle difficult terrain to experience the magic of the Lake District.
If you’re short on time, new to hiking, or looking for a route that’s genuinely accessible without compromising on views, Latrigg is well worth a visit.
Sometimes, the best adventures are the ones that everyone can share.
