My West Highland Way Kit List

What I’m packing for wild camping the West Highland Way

There’s a particular kind of quiet that only arrives when you carry everything you need on your back. No bookings, no fixed walls, no certainty beyond the next step. The West Highland Way has a reputation for drama—its sweeping glens, brooding skies, and the slow, honest rhythm it demands—but what draws me most is the simplicity it strips you down to.

Wild camping along the route isn’t just about finding a place to sleep; it’s about choosing, very deliberately, what matters. Every item earns its place. Every ounce has a purpose. Comfort becomes something you assemble piece by piece at the end of a long day, often in the half-light, with tired legs and a full heart.

This isn’t a list of gear so much as a collection of small decisions—things that will keep me dry when the rain inevitably rolls in, warm when the temperature drops without warning, and grounded when I’m miles from anywhere familiar. It’s the difference between enduring the journey and fully stepping into it.

So before the boots hit the path and the signal disappears, here’s everything I’m trusting to carry me from Milngavie to Fort William…
